Behavioural Addiction

Pornography  refers to the visual, written, or audio representation of sexual content intended to arouse. Mostly it concerns the visual content. Since the advent of internet and mobile phones, accessibility to individuals  both young and old has become relatively easy.

The concern of the Society is the youth who fall prey to porn addiction. Porn addiction is a form of behavioural addiction where a person compulsively watches or engages with pornographic material despite negative effects on their mental, emotional or social life. It functions similar to other addictions , such as gambling or substance abuse, by activating the brain’s reward system. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in mediating diverse physiological and behavioural functions, especially , reward, pleasure and addiction.

Excessive porn use increases dopamine release, creating a cycle of craving and temporary satisfaction. Many people use porn to cope with loneliness, stress, or depression. Over time, tolerance  develops, users seek more extreme content for similar satisfaction.

The ill – effects of pornography involve both physical and psychological aspects. Medical and Neurological problems , Cultural and Ethical aspects are definitely causes of concern.

As people of the Medical profession, it is our bounden duty to create  awareness  in the young minds about the ill- effects of pornography addiction and ways and means to overcome them. Let us all come together in this noble task of creating healthy minds  and healthy bodies.
